Is ChatGPT Replacing Google?

Is ChatGPT Replacing Google?

We’re in the midst of a data-driven transformation.

Launched in 2022, ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer app in history, reaching 100 million users in just two months. Today, it has over 800 million weekly active users and processes more than 1 billion queries per day.

So, what does this mean?
Considering Google still gets around 14 billion searches daily, has its throne been shaken?

Access to Information Is Changing

Clicking through results on Google now feels like a waste of time.
Users want direct answers.

When you ask ChatGPT “Plan a 3-day tour in France”, you get an instant result.

  • 43% of people aged 18–29 use ChatGPT regularly.

  • 20% of employees now prefer ChatGPT over traditional search at work.
This rate was just 8% a year ago—a 150% increase.

User Behavior Is Transforming

Developers are now asking ChatGPT instead of Stack Overflow.
The result?
The number of new questions on Stack Overflow has dropped to 2009 levels.
That’s like going 15 years back in time.

And it’s not just developers…
Users now want to summarize their need in a single sentence—and get a direct solution.

What About Advertising Revenues?

Google generated over $300 billion in ad revenue in 2023.
But there’s a new threat: zero-click search.
That means users get the answer directly from Google without clicking on any site.

When Google shows an AI result box:

  • Organic click-through rate drops by 70%

  • Ad clicks decrease by 12%

How is Google responding?
With products like Bard and AI Overviews.
But this puts their own ad revenue at risk.

SEO Is Not What It Used to Be

If AI summarizes it, why would users visit the site?

Web traffic is declining.
Some publishers have even started blocking GPTBot.

The New Strategy:

  • Create original, in-depth, well-sourced content that AI can cite

  • Be visible not only on Google, but also within ChatGPT

A new concept has even emerged:
AEO – Answer Engine Optimization
A possible successor to SEO.

So, What Do You Think?

Is Google’s throne shaking, or is ChatGPT just a passing trend?

Which platform do you use more—are habits or speed winning?

Share your thoughts in the comments:
